New 'Automatic Passenger Counting' working group

Statistically accurate passenger counts are vital for public transport companies and multi-company transport networks. Modern automatic passenger counting (APC) sensors and statistically reliable projected data are needed to align the mobility offer and to enable performance-based revenue distribution, e.g. NTD reports in the US.

In addition, information about passenger numbers and vehicle occupancy become increasingly important due to the pandemic.

General information about APC working group:

  • Online meetings for short presentations and information exchange
  • If requested additional one-day meetings per year, on-site with rotating hosts
  • Participants will be invited to suggest topics and these will be specified in advance
  • No participation fees
  • Any travel or accommodation costs incurred are at the participant's expense

We propose the following topics:

  • Technical and organisational issues regarding the fleet equipment
  • Testing the counting accuracy
  • Managing the data in a background system (MOBILEstatistics)
  • Transfer of manual counting data
  • Object recognition
  • Projection
  • Certification of systems for revenue distribution
  • Real-time availability of passenger counting data
  • Prognosis of vehicle occupancy

The aim of the working group:

  • An exchange of experiences in the field of APC
