INIT builds booking platform for the flagship project regiomove at the Technology Region Karlsruhe

There is currently a great deal of discussion around the world about new mobility concepts and the process of integrating all transportation services. Karlsruhe is already well on its way with a flagship project: regiomove was launched last December. The plan is to integrate as many of the mobility services in the Karlsruhe Technology Region as possible, including everything from bike rentals to bus and rail connections. For this to happen, all providers must be brought together on a single planning and booking platform – which will be developed by INIT.

Connected mobility service

To boost mobility in the region, various available mobility services will be pooled at a number of mobility hubs, referred to as ports, in the coming years. In the future, passengers will be able to switch between different modes of transport easily and comfortably at these ports, which will be in selected locations. The location and need assessment process is already underway. The next step will be to develop the IT infrastructure for the required booking and planning platform and to devise a comprehensive concept for the various tariffs and contracts within the mobility network. The aim is to provide users with an app that can be used to plan a journey from A to B, while taking all transportation options into consideration that are available at that moment. After selecting the desired connection, which may also involve changing between different modes of transport, the tickets or passes required can be purchased directly in the app. The tickets or passes are paid for using the payment method selected and entered during the registration process (direct debit, credit card, or PayPal).

INIT develops a central booking platform

This part of the project will draw on INIT’s experience and expertise as the world’s leading provider of planning, dispatching, telematics and ticketing solutions for public transport. Thanks to its open system architecture and multiclient capability, INIT’s tried-and-tested back-office ticketing system, MOBILEvario, is already able to support multiple companies, sales channels, and ticketing forms.

INIT uses open application programming interfaces (API) that allow seamless integration of the data and systems from different partners. This is crucial to the success of regiomove because the different modules of the individual mobility providers must all be incorporated. INIT solutions are always modular in construction, so setting up the regiomove booking platform is easy and cost-effective – even more so since the project can be coordinated and handled from INIT’s headquarters in Karlsruhe.

Other companies and institutions working under the umbrella of the Karlsruhe Technology Region, as part of the flagship regiomove project, are the Karlsruher Verkehrsverbund (KVV), the Regionalverband Mittlerer Oberrhein (RVMO), the KIT (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology), the Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences, the FZI (Forschungszentrum Informatik), raumobil GmbH, the PTV Group, stadtmobil CarSharing, the City of Karlsruhe, and the District of Rastatt. All of these entities are working together to demonstrate once again the strength of the Karlsruhe region and its Cluster for Transport Excellence when it comes to developing innovative IT solutions for transportation systems.

The total costs associated with the regiomove project amount to approximately EUR 6.6 million. The state of Baden-Württemberg and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) are altogether contributing around EUR 4.9 million of financing towards the regiomove project.
