ID-based ticketing system for C-TRAN

The Northwest of the US will see a cross-state showcase project for state-of-the-art fare management

Mobile payments, EMV and ID-based smart cards are the lasted developments in fare payment options. Another is connected mobility that links the fare management of individual transport providers. C-TRAN, Vancouver, is in line with these trends due to their decision to adopt the ticketing system of their neighbouring transport authority TriMet, Portland.

Established partnership between C-TRAN and INIT

Clark County Public Transportation Benefit Area (C-TRAN), the transport authority of Vancouver in the US-State of Washington, and INIT, have an established partnership that spans over the last 10 years. Starting with an operations management system in 2004, C-TRAN has since implemented further solutions from INIT that have helped enhance and improve public transport services in Vancouver, Washington. Recently, C-TRAN signed another contract with INIT for the delivery of a state-of-the-art electronic fare collection system.

The agreement was made in cooperation with Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet), the transport authority of the neighbouring city Portland in Oregon, who awarded INIT the contract for an account-based fare management system in April of 2014.

We are excited to be working with TriMet and INIT on this enhanced electronic fare system. Employing this technology will significantly improve the fare payment and collection processes, making regional travel that much more convenient for transit users in Vancouver and Portland.

Cutting-edge technology for maximum comfort

Through C-TRAN’s integration into the client-based TriMet system, a dovetailed ticketing system arises for the whole metropolitan area providing passengers maximum comfort. Hence, they will be able to purchase their ticket from start to destination, even if they have to use different operators or will leave the state. Moreover, the new fare system will include fare capping which automatically offers travellers the lowest possible fare. This will provide passengers greater flexibility and ease of mobility when travelling on the bi-state transportation systems. INIT will equip C-TRAN’s more than 100 vehicles with PROXmobil passenger terminals.

When fully operational, C-TRAN will offer their passengers both open payment in accordance with the contactless credit card standard EMV and closed loop fare options.

Modern electronic fare system

The ID-based fare management system will allow passengers the convenience of simply tapping their media like smart cards, smartphones or contactless credit cards at the PROXmobil passenger terminals. The terminal subsequently communicates in real-time with INIT’s back-office system MOBILEvario. Its online validation server authorises the media and therewith ticket sales. MOBILEvario will be further used to define fare rules, manage customer relations and deliver processing and clearing of revenues for the regional e-fare system operated by TriMet and C-TRAN, while protecting individual authority data and fare structures.

C-TRAN’s partnership with INIT for the execution of a modern electronic fare system adds to the more than 50 fare management projects established by INIT worldwide.
