INIT's innovative technology delivers contactless fare capping in Birmingham

Since July 2021, in response to recent trends for hybrid working due to the covid-19 pandemic, thanks to INIT’s sophisticated technology, National Express West Midlands passengers enjoy capped fares for consecutive and non-consecutive travel days and can choose between daily, 3 day or 7 day capping. INIT delivered a similar flexible fare capping system to TriMet in Portland, US in 2019 but this latest solution has been adapted to the specific needs of our customer in the UK.

Passengers simply tap the same contactless bank card or smart phone or smart watch on the bus validator each time they board. They can make as many bus journeys as they wish and INIT’s innovative system ensures they only pay a capped fare for the journeys they make.

The cap limits how much customers pay for their journeys so with a 7 day cap with NXWM for instance, at the end of the seven days, they will be charged no more than the £15 cost of a weekly ticket. So, customers’ savings kick in after travelling for just four days in that one week.

Passengers no longer have to search for change or work out the best tickets for their day’s journeys. They don’t even need to tap their card or device again when they exit the bus. INIT is proud to deliver innovative solutions to keep passengers moving throughout the pandemic and beyond.
